The Hand – Maupassant (A Review)


The short story ‘La Main d’écorchée‘ (The Flayed Hand) by Guy de Maupassant was initially published by L’Almanach lorrain de Pont-à-Mousson in 1875, under the pseudonym of Joseph Prunier. Some eight years later Maupassant reworked ‘La Main d’écorchée’ and published it simply as ‘La Main’ or ‘The Hand’. Maupassant claimed that in his teens he was shown a mummified hand by the poet Algernon Swinburne, this incident being interpreted as the inspiration for his earlier short story ‘La Main Ecorchée’. The Lorelei


She was certainly no twelve-year-old like Nately’s whore’s kid sister, looking like a plucked chicken or like a twig with the bark peeled off. Yet not quite ‘Du schönes Fischermädchen’, no Loreley singing on a rock along the Rhine River near Sankt Goar. This Lorelei was eine schöne Jugend Mädchen living in Köln am Rhein. A fay for whom winter nights became her theatre and her bedroom the lit stage for her performance. A siren intent on seducing her audience with the allure of a Lorelei. Read more of this post
